Nanna Ditzel, a woman in the male-dominated world of industrial design, was a leading member of the generation of designers who created the postwar modern movement in Denmark. No single creation expressed this spirit more than her Hanging Egg Chair, designed 1957, which was often featured in interior and fashion magazines. Suspended by a chain from the ceiling, this no-gravity chair suggested a liberated lifestyle, free from earthbound fears.

Combining Warmth & Minimalism, Style & Function

Unlike many other trendy or eye-catching pieces of furniture that impress aesthetically, but fail in terms of comfort and usability, the hanging egg chair successfully combines form and function.  Although stylish and modern all  Nanna Ditzel’s designs were, above all, sensitive to the requirements of comfort and livability.

She incorporated the minimalist visual elements that characterized the “Scandinavian-look” of furnishings and architecture of the mid-1950s to 1960s period and combined it with the friendly warmth of rattan.

The combination of a simple chain suspending a wicker rattan basket artfully sculpted into the iconic egg shape gave rise to the entire “floating chair” movement. With a single cushion located within the floating sculpted basket, sitting in it creates a feeling that one is entering a truly personal space. It creates privacy and comfort in what some characterize as a seating pod that uses the most naturally ergonomic shape possible — the oval.

Nana & Jørgen Dietzel

Nanna Ditzel was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1923. She trained as a cabinetmaker before going on to study at the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. She was always inspired by the challenges of new materials and techniques, and in the 50’s she experimented with split-level floor seating. Nanna was a pioneer in the fields of fiberglass, wickerwork and foam rubber, and in various disciplines such as cabinet making, jewelry, tableware, and textiles.

Nanna and her husband Jørgen Ditzel exhibited their first furniture designs in Copenhagen. They won various awards together, including silver medals at the Milan Triennale in 1951 and 1957 and a gold medal in 1960, and the prestigious Lunning Prize in 1956. But their life and work together ended abruptly when Jørgen passed away unexpectedly in 1961 at the age of 40.

After Jørgen Ditzel’s death in 1961, Nanna continued to design, and in 1968 she moved to London where she established the Interspace International Furniture and Design Centre, an institution which developed a high reputation as a center for experimental design.

Nanna Ditzel returned to Denmark in 1986 and opened a combined design studio and furniture workshop in Copenhagen.

A Leading Figure in the Renewal of Danish Design

With her postmodernism attitude and rebellion against tradition, she became a leading figure in the renewal of Danish design in the 1990’s, well after her 70th birthday. Very often, her works had a subjective starting point, which was contrary to specific problems to be solved. However, she had a magnificent ability to transform her artistic dreams into very functional and purposeful designs.

At an age when most other people have long since retired, the grand old lady of modern design continued to attract worldwide attention and she welcomed the inspiration that came from new materials and production methods.

For Ditzel, the aesthetics of the chair were just as important as the function:

“It is very important to take into account the way a chair’s appearance combines with the person who sits in it. Some chairs look like crutches. And I don’t like them at all.”

Fredericia

Nanna Ditzel was one Denmark’s  most versatile and creative female designers of the 20th century and throughout her life, she was awarded numerous prizes. In 1998, she was awarded the lifelong artist’s grant by the Danish ministry of culture and a book of her work, Motion And Beauty, was published. She has died in Copenhagen at the age of 81

The chair is manufactured by Sika Design, one of the oldest Scandinavian producers of rattan and wicker furniture. Be it as part of a minimalist theme, or part of an eclectic blend of furnishings, the hanging egg chair will always add a bit of refined elegance to any space and inevitably become the central point of any decorative scheme.

Review: Hand Woven Egg Swing Chair with Stand by Jo-Liza

Do you know Grace & Frankie by Netflix? I saw a beautiful chair in the beach house on “Grace & Frankie” and fell in love. I found out it is Jo-Liza’s  Tiara Side Chair from the Rope Lace Collection. While searching for the Rope Lace Collection I stumbled upon the Hanging Egg Swing and guess what, I wanted this chair so badly that I decided to buy one and I could not be happier.

SWING INTO NOSTALGIA

This beautiful egg shaped swing chair is one of the handmade products in the Rope Lace Collection by Jo Liza. It is made of intricately designed wrought iron and handwoven with seagrass. Its intricate, swirling pattern is reminiscent of leaves, vines, and large oval flowers, providing a natural, outdoorsy pop of life to any indoor environment. The seagrass that makes up the seat itself is comfortable enough to spend hours curled up inside of, but adding a cushion of your own can take this seat from reasonably comfortable to downright luxurious.

Bohemian hand-woven swirling pattern. It’s like a kind of furniture poetry.

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY?

Pros

This delicate seagrass egg swing’s primary asset is its appearance. Whereas other egg swings can come across as clunky eyesores, this one is light and airy— it adds a touch of whimsy to the room and does not overwhelm any of the other furniture or decorations in the general vicinity.

The egg swing chair by Jo Liza is both beautiful and functional. Though the product can be suspended from a ceiling, it comes with a sturdy yet elegant metal stand.

The swing is also incredibly easy to assemble. Though the basket can be suspended from a ceiling, the fact that the metal stand is included is another plus; whether you plan to use your brand new egg swing indoors or outdoors, you have everything you will need in order to set up this product upon purchase.

Cons

Though this product is sturdy enough to withstand normal indoor use, it may not be recommended for households with young children or rambunctious pets. Though seagrass is a pet-safe material, it is not necessarily pet-resistant– dogs and cats can pull apart the fibers that make up the swing itself if they use it too roughly. This material is also difficult to clean, which means that it may not be spill-resistant. Another con is the lack of a seat cushion, but this is easily rectified by adding one of your choice.

FEW WORDS FROM DESIGNER

designer egg chair
She was chosen as one of the “BEST of the BEST” by the New York Metro chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) February 2014.

“This beautiful egg swing chair is one of the handmade products in our Rope Lace Collection. It is made of intricately designed wrought iron and handwoven with seagrass.

Growing up in the furniture industry, I have been inspired at a young age by my mother, who was a great influence in introducing amazing finds and treasures from all over the world. She was known as “Asia’s Queen of Antiques” during her time.  Working for her when I was in college, and allowing me to create and design my own ideas to sell to international buyers during our trade shows abroad and in our retail stores back in the Philippines, I was able to learn what things were marketable and what people wanted.

I was lucky that when I started my business in Los Angeles in 1992, I was able to create products that people needed and loved. I love fashion and I get most of my inspiration from my travels here and abroad. I study fashion trends. Furniture trends usually follow fashion trends. I love when people think my products are unique and pretty but functional at the same time.  I want each of my product to “make the whole room look nice”. It becomes a sculpture and the focal point wherever you put it. It can definitely stand by itself in an empty space. It can be mixed with different styles as well and still be able to stand out nicely…”

Comfort and Design

Without a doubt, comfort is probably the first criteria that anyone looking to buy any chair looks at. If your chair is uncomfortable and just doesn’t feel right, then it won’t let you rest in peace. The Modern Contemporary Accent Hanging Swing Chair is built to provide perfect anatomical comfort. Everything from the beautiful egg shape to the very material used for the fabric just oozes luxury and comfort.

Since the comfort is all in the design, we’ll start there. Clearly, the human body hasn’t evolved much over a period of 40 years, so the egg-shaped design with generously padded cushions still works magic for the spine. And thanks to the cradling effect once you’re seated, there’s absolutely no risk of falling over even when rocking a wide swing.

However, the icing on the cake comes in the form of a generously padded, soft, red fabric interior. I’m not just talking about the smooth interior coating all over the inside. There are actually two thick individual cushions that support your weight as well as provide a flat place for your back to rest. Unlike other hanging chairs that wear out and leave your feet hanging on the hard edge, the cushions on this bad boy won’t be thinning anytime soon. Thanks to all these and more comfort features, don’t be too surprised if you end up swinging yourself to sleep.

Combining Chic & Function

Unlike other trendy or eye catching pieces of furniture that impress aesthetically, but fail in terms of comfort and usability, the hanging egg chair successfully combines form and function. It is as stylish as it is practical and comfortable. This is due to the way that the egg chair was originally designed by famed Danish furniture designer, Nanna Ditzel.

Hanging Egg Chair by Nanna Ditzel

She incorporated the minimalist visual elements that characterized the “Scandinavian-look” of furnishings and architecture of the mid-1950s to 1960s period and combined it with the sturdy warmth of rattan.

This design also allowed for diversity in terms of basket and cushion material, basket/pod color and even the option to create the same look and comfort by using a sturdy frame as opposed to the stand alone suspended chain.

Wicker & Rattan

It is important to note that the fact that the original design used the wicker process for the sculpting of the basket eventually allowed for greater degrees of variety to be derived from it. Contrary to what many people assume, wicker is not a material, it is a process by which material is weaved together and given a shape. Rattan, a relative of the palm tree, is very strong due to its solid core and vertical grains. While its sturdiness could definitely resist outdoor use, it tends to fade when exposed to direct sunlight. This makes rattan hanging chairs not suitable for prolonged outdoor use.

The original look of the rattan basket, however, can be preserved even when other materials are used. The same wicker process and look can be accomplished with other material, such as polyethylene.By using this synthetic material, the egg chair is more resilient to moisture and weather, making it a perfect choice for a hanging egg chair with exterior applications. The look of the original design is maintained without the fear of fading.

Other natural materials can also be used with the wicker process for hanging chairs. These include cane and bamboo. Due to the natural properties of these materials, the hanging wicker baskets made with them tend to have a more open look. The weave is broader, allowing for baskets with more air flow. While this removes some of the pod-like privacy characteristics of the original design, it does make the egg chair more practical for areas where improved air circulation is desired, or a more transparent look is sought as a part of the overall design scheme of the room.

Contemporary Style

Hanging egg chairs can also be made using a process of sculpting and molding synthetic materials, such as acrylic and fiberglass (as bubble chair) into solid forms. This creates a solid basket that replaces the natural look obtained from rattan or other wicker weaved material with the cleaner and cooler look that comes from a smooth solid surface. The end result does not deter from the original comfort and stylish properties of the original egg chair. It simply adds another element of style and design which creates further options in using such a chair.

Excellence in design comes from creating an original concept that continues to perform its function in a timeless manner. Simultaneously, it must also continue to inspire new and useful variations derived from the original while staying true to it. That is what Nanna Ditzel’s iconic hanging egg chair achieved. Whether you select the original design or any of its variations or derivatives, a hanging egg chair will always bring with it impeccable style. It will also demonstrate an adherence to a function that will make it the most talked about and the most used piece of furniture in any room that it is placed.
